Life Guard Academy

City of Patterson's Life Guard Academy is a course that follows the American Red Cross life guarding curriculum. Participants will receive a lifeguard manual and a CPR training mask. Successful completion of Life Guard Academy will result in participants obtaining First Aid, CPR & AED for the Professional Rescuer Certificates and Life Guarding Certificates. 

Requirements: Participants must Be 15 years old by the last day of class, or older. Participants must pass a pretest that includes:
  • 300-yard swim (100 freestyle, 100 breaststroke and 100  of either freestyle or breaststroke)
  • Times pretest that consist of a 20-yard swim to receive a 10 lb object from at least 10 ft deep and return to the starting point, making sure to keep the object and their head above the water.
  • Tread water for 2 min without the help of their hands.
All components must be successfully complete to participate in Life Guard Academy.

Participants cannot take the pretest more than once in 24hrs.

Location: Classes will begin at the Hammon Senior Center and move to the Aquatic Center. Classes will include a 30 min lunch break(except March 16th).
Cost: $50.00-Patterson Resident
         $150.00- Non-Resident 

*Important Details: Registration will be open in person only at our Recreation Department Office, after the pretest has taken place at Patterson Aquatic Center. Participants MUST pass the pretest before they can register for Life Guard Academy.


Life Guard Review Course

This review course is designed to review the life-guarding skills and core knowledge points required to renew your current certification in life-guarding.

Prerequisite: Must have current Red Cross Life Guard/ First-Aid/ CPR/ AED or shallow water life-guard/First-Aid/ CPR/ AED certificate.
Note: If certifications are expired, participants must take he full life-guard/ shallow water life-guarding course. You must attend all classes to pass.

Age: 15 years and older
Dates: Session 1: February 23rd                3:30-8:00pm
                               February 24th & 25th    12:00-4:30pm
            Session 2: March 30th                    3:30-8:00pm
                                March 31st-April 1st     12:00-4:00pm
Location: Classes will begin at the Hammon Senior Center and will move to the Aquatic Center. Classes will include a 30 minute lunch each day.

Cost: $70.00  - Returning Employee Discount: $35.00
Registration: Opens on February 6th in person only & must have current certificate
